Voluntary Markets
Voluntary carbon trading markets exist in absence of a regulated market framework. As the environmental markets develop further on the back of increased awareness of the impact of climate change, a growing number of businesses are implementing strategies to minimise their greenhouse-gas emissions or become carbon-neutral. These companies are actively pursuing carbon offsets or Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) through the non-regulated voluntary markets.
The market in VERs is a global market characterised by carbon offsets or emission reductions which are produced from a range of projects including energy efficiency, renewable energy such as wind and solar power, landfill gas capture, carbon sequestration and other technologies.
It is important for organisations purchasing carbon offsets as part of a carbon neutral or reduction strategy to ensure the commodity they are buying is authentic and has been accredited and independently verified under a recognised scheme. In Australia, voluntary emission reduction projects can achieve accreditation through the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) Greenhouse Friendly programme or internationally, projects can also become accredited through the framework of the Gold Standard (GS). EMIT only deals in projects which have been accredited under either the Australian Greenhouse Office or the Gold Standard.
EMIT works with project developers to bring their project to market and monetise the carbon asset through the sale of the VERs to appropriate counterparties. As part of the process, EMIT’s experienced advisory division will assist or project manage the accreditation process through either the AGO or the GS to ensure an efficient outcome to enable the VERs to realise their full market value. The Carbon Bank
Organisations wishing to pursue a complete or partial carbon offset program can now purchase their emission reductions or carbon offsets directly from EMIT. The EMIT CARBON BANK has been established to streamline the process of purchasing carbon offsets by providing a one stop shop for an organisation’s emission strategy needs. At the EMIT CARBON BANK, an organisation can purchase the following products: - Carbon offsets or Verified Emission Reductions (VERs)
- Accredited carbon offsets independently verified and approved abatement
- Provides surety that your organisation’s purchase is a ‘real’ and verifiable emission reduction product
- Quality of offsets is very important so EMIT prefers to offer only those that have been accredited by the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) under their Greenhouse Friendly program or through the internationally recognised Gold Standard (GS) for voluntary carbon offsets.
- Renewable energy certificates (RECs)
- As part of your organisations carbon offset strategy, the purchase of renewable energy certificates ensures your electricity consumption (a major GHG source) is being supplied via emission free technology such as wind power, hydro power and other renewable energy technologies.
