Joint Implementation (JI)
The Joint Implementation (JI), as defined in Article 6 of the Kyoto Protocol, is one of the three flexibility mechanisms and provides for Annexe 1 countries of the Kyoto Protocol to implement project activities that reduce emissions in other Annexe 1 countries, in return for emission reduction units (ERUs).
One ERU represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2-e) of greenhouse gas.
The major Annexe 1 countries undertaking or preparing to undertake JI projects include Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, the Ukraine and New Zealand.
Registration of JI projects under the UNFCCC can occur by a simplified procedure using a Track 1 approach or through verification by the Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee (JISC) using a Track 2 approach. Each accreditation Track leads to the ultimate registration and issuance of the ERUs.
Unlike CDM projects which can have CERs issued prior to 2008, JI projects are only eligible for ERU issuance from 2008 to 2012.
